Feeling well should feel normal

What if feeling good felt normal again?

Waking up with energy. Thinking clearly. Feeling strong, capable, connected, and at home in your body. Having enough in the tank for your work, your relationships, your workouts, your family, and the things you actually love doing.

That’s the goal.

At Alabama Functional Medicine, we don’t see a collection of separate problems to chase. We look at how your body is functioning as a whole, all the way down to the cells that create energy, communicate, repair, respond, and keep everything working together. Because when the body functions better, life can feel different too.

Whole body. Whole woman. Whole health.

Your symptoms matter

They just aren't the whole story.

Fatigue, brain fog, thyroid and hormone changes, gut trouble, pelvic pain: we hear these stories every week, often from women who have been told their labs look fine. We treat them as signals that something in the body isn’t functioning as well as it could.

Here's what we believe

Pain isn’t a normal part of any stage of a woman’s life, and a “normal” lab range isn’t the same as feeling well.

We don’t treat you like a thyroid. Or a gut. Or a hormone problem. We treat you like a whole person.

Our method

The Saluxis Method: our framework for getting you better, not just managed

The goal is a body that functions well. The Saluxis Method is how we get there. Therapies, supplements, nutrition, sleep, and testing are the tools we use along the way, chosen for you.

1

Release

Clearing what’s driving inflammation and dysfunction.

2

Replenish

Restoring what your body is missing.

3

Reset

Recalibrating hormones, gut, and metabolism.

4

Rewire

Building the habits and support designed to help progress last.

Plain language, no jargon

What root-cause, functional medicine actually means

Functional medicine takes a whole-body approach to healthcare. Instead of only asking, “What symptoms are you experiencing?” it goes a step further and asks, “Why are these symptoms happening in the first place?”

Instead of matching a symptom to a prescription, The Saluxis Method looks at how your hormones, gut, immune system, and metabolism are connected, often through deeper testing like free T3, reverse T3, and thyroid antibodies instead of TSH alone, and a personalized plan built around your specific biology.

This isn’t a replacement for your primary care doctor or OB/GYN. It’s what many women need in addition, especially when symptoms cross too many specialties for one provider to connect.

What we treat

Two areas where we go deeper than most practices

A Place for Hope

Your physician

Led by a doctor who has spent over 30 years looking for the "why"

Ryan McWhorter, MD, IFMCP, has spent more than 30 years caring for patients across Alabama. His advanced training through the Institute for Functional Medicine, along with further study in cardiometabolic health, hormone therapy, and cellular medicine, shapes how our whole care team looks for the reason behind a symptom.

My husband and I drove from Houston to Alabama to see Dr McWhorter concerning Lyme Disease and severe fatigue. He said to start by getting my hormones checked and highly recommended me to get on bioidentical testosterone for the severe fatigue. My fatigue is gone and I’m so grateful for his expertise in this area. He takes the time to listen and figure things out.

I was extremely sick when I came to AL Functional Medicine. I had seen multiple doctors and had many labs done, but no one would listen to my suspicions of mold illness. Doc and his staff confirmed and validated what I had suspected and for the first time, I had hope that I could get better. The entire staff has been amazing throughout my 6 month program there and I am so much better than when I came in. I would trust anything Doc recommends.

I first met Dr. McWhorter ten years ago when I was seven, and he immediately stood out for his kindness, compassion, and genuine commitment to his patients. He helped manage my ADHD with nutritional supplements that improved my focus, and more recently supported my recovery from hyperthyroidism with supplements that strengthened and healed my thyroid. Dr. McWhorter always goes above and beyond, and his staff is just as wonderful. I highly recommend his practice to anyone seeking caring, patient-focused support.

Before your first visit

Common questions we get before first visits

We’re a membership-based practice, which simply means we work for you instead of an insurance company. There’s no application and nothing to figure out on your own. Everything starts with a first appointment, where your provider reviews where you’ve been, what you’ve tried, and what’s worked, then builds your treatment plan. From there, your provider recommends the membership that fits: some patients need a season of comprehensive, high-touch care to get their health back, and others just want an ongoing relationship with a provider who looks deeper, much like primary care. If you’re not sure this is for you yet, that’s exactly what our free Functional Foundations session is for.

This depends on the level of care you need, and you won’t have to guess. The easiest way to get clear answers is our free monthly Functional Foundations session, where you’ll see how we work, what a plan could look like for you, and what it costs, before booking anything. From there, there’s a path at nearly every budget: provider-recommended supplements, individual in-office therapies you can book without a membership, and membership programs for ongoing, provider-guided care. Your provider will confirm exact costs at your first appointment. No pressure, and no surprises.

Most standard panels only check a narrow set of markers, like TSH alone for your thyroid. Functional medicine testing looks more broadly at free T3, free T4, reverse T3, thyroid antibodies, adrenal patterns, nutrient levels, and inflammation, because “normal” on a standard range doesn’t always mean optimal for your specific body.
No. Pain is common in women’s health, but common doesn’t mean normal. Pelvic pain, pressure, and pain during intercourse often have an identifiable, treatable driver, whether that’s hormonal, inflammatory, muscular, or nervous system related, and it deserves real investigation.
Pelvic floor physical therapy focuses on the muscles themselves. Functional pelvic health looks at the muscles plus the hormonal, gut, and nervous system factors that are often driving the dysfunction in the first place. Many of our patients benefit from both, and we coordinate directly with trusted pelvic floor physical therapists as part of your care.
You’ll go through an in-depth review of your health history and symptoms, often going back further than a standard visit allows, along with a discussion of the specialized testing that may be right for you. From there, Dr. McWhorter and our team build a personalized plan based on what’s actually happening in your body, not a generic protocol.
Great question! We do not accept insurance. We provide the best technology available. Insurance companies stopped keeping pace with advances in technology 20 years ago and most doctors will only do what’s covered by insurance. We continually research and incorporate the latest and greatest available treatments, so you can actually get well. We don’t work for the insurance company; we work for you!
Most of our patients live throughout the Auburn-Montgomery corridor, including Opelika, Prattville, Wetumpka, Millbrook, and Pike Road, but we also welcome patients who travel from across Alabama and neighboring states for care they haven’t been able to find closer to home.
